Lyrics

Down The Road
(Rodney Hayden, Bill Whitbeck)

Moonshine in Knoxville, me and Charlie and Bill
We left a lot of stills but I feel like we drank em dry
Heard some good music, laughed till we cried
When the sun came up I had to say goodbye

I don't hang around too long
First you'll see me then I'll be gone
I dance to my own song, gotta keep rolling on
Good times I've had my share
Say the word and I'll be there
Living life without a care
I'll see you down the road

Summer night at old Gruene Hall ,it was packed from wall to wall
People are having a ball, dancing the night away
We had so much fun, wish I could stay
We gotta pack it up, but we'll be back someday

I don't hang around too long
First you'll see me then I'll be gone
I dance to my own song, gotta keep rolling on
Good times I've had my share
Say the word and I'll be there
Living life without a care
I'll see you down the road

It's good to see your smile, girl it's been a while
I might give up the miles the way you're looking at me
But the way I am, is the way I'll be
When the morning comes you're gonna have to set me free

I dont' hang around too long
First you'll see me then I'll be gone
I dance to my own song, gotta keep rolling on
Good times I've had my share
Say the word and I'll be there
Living life without a care
I'll see you down the road

It Goes By Too Fast
(Rodney Hayden)

I've burned up some miles on the black top
Singing songs and picking on a flat top
Nothing but memories to show for it all
All night parties and motel jams
In a heartbeat I'd do it all again
All the load in's and last calls
I've been watching the good times pass but they go by too fast

They're just a photo in a book
That I'm glad that someone took
So I can look back on the times we've had
But they go by too fast

I saw my girl for the first time in three weeks
Dropped everything and drove to New Orleans
Feeling no pain, drinking hurricanes
Stayed at a hotel off the French Quarter
Hiding from the sun with room service ordered
Dancing all night and loving all day
We've been watching the good times pass but they go by too fast

They're just a photo in a book
That I'm glad that someone took
So I can look back on all the times we've had
But they go by too fast

I got a buddy that lives in New Braunfels
We've seen some good times, we've shared some troubles
Ain't nothing better than knowing you've got a good friend
From late night out in L.A. to sun rises on the highway
He's stuck with me through the thick and thin
We've been watching the good times pass but they go by too fast

Now they're just a photo in a book
That I'm glad that someone took
So I can look back on all the times we've had
They just go by too fast

Whoever Wrote This Song
(Rodney Hayden, Byron Hill)

Whoever wrote this song must have known you
Must have held you, must have loved you
It seems impossible someone could write it
Without feeling exactly like this

Did you break his heart
Did you leave him too

Whoever wrote this song must have known you
Must have held you, must have loved you

How could someone else find these sad words
Unless you mattered, and it's a bad hurt
Your goodbye must have taken him forever
To get better, will I ever

I can sympathize
With all that he went through

Whoever wrote this song must have known you
Must have held you, must have loved you

Did you break his heart
Did you leave him too

Whoever wrote this song must have known you
Must have held you, must have loved you
Like I do

Nuevo Laredo
(Rodney Hayden)

I woke up in room 213
At the El Dorado
Looked down over a cobblestone street
In Nuevo Laredo

Walked outside and it dawned on me
It was Cinco De Mayo
So I thought I'd stay and drink
In Nuevo Laredo

I think I can appreciate
This Mexican holiday
So I think that I might stay
In Nuevo Laredo

I found a bar called the Juarez Saloon
And I found a table
Checked my watch, it was almost noon
But I was willing and they were able

Ordered tequila and toasted the flag
That was hanging from the ceiling
She brought me another and as I tossed it back
I said Maria, I've got a feeling

I think I can appreciate
This Mexican holiday
So I think that I might stay
In Nuevo Laredo

The band was playing a slow song
As the moon rose higher
Maria whispered in my ear
Won't you hold me tighter

As we stumbled across the street
I fumbled for the key in my pocket
She led me through that door
As I unlocked it

I think I can appreciate
This Mexican holiday
So I think that I might stay
In Nuevo Laredo

I woke up in room 213
Alone at the El Dorado
Looked down over a cobblestone street
In Nuevo Laredo

Lonely Day
(Rodney Hayden, Trent Summar, Bill Whitbeck)

Heartache for one at a table for two
Walked to the counter and paid
I tipped the waitress and grabbed my coat
Oh what a lonely day

I Walked down to the park down by the river
Watched some children play
Sat on a bench and relived old memories
Oh what a lonely day

I've kicked around this hard luck town
Searching for the right words to say
If love were easy everybody'd be in it
Oh what a lonely day

I stopped and watched an outdoor wedding
I was glad the rain stayed away
I didn't know the bride but she sure looked pretty
Oh what a lonely day

I've kicked around this hard luck town
Searching for the right words to say
If love were easy everybody'd be in it
Oh what a lonely day

Tangled, torn and totally blue
Ever since the day I lost you

Had a date last night, the first time in forever
She invited me to stay
I kindly declined, thought of you till sunrise
Oh what a lonely day

I've kicked around this hard luck town
Searching for the right words to say
If love were easy everybody'd be in it
Oh what a lonely day

I'll Ride Again
(Rodney Hayden)

They took my saddle and gun
They took my silver and gold
Today, today

They locked me in a cell
Said there was no chance of bail
To pay, to pay
Oh no

I've robbed banks and trains
From San Antone to Santa Fe
The last few years, the last few years

I've shot men for money
I've shot men for spite
And I'm gonna hang, I'm gonna hang
that's what they say

I'm gonna fly across the badlands like the wind
Tonight I'll ride again

I never knew my father
But I saw a picture of him
He had a scar upon his face

If my mother was still with us
I don't know what she might say
But I know she'd pray, I know she'd pray
For my soul

I'm gonna fly across the badlands like the wind
Tonight I'll ride again

I hear the crowd a gathering
Slapping that sheriff on his back
Another job well done

He comes to put the handcuffs on me
There's one thing he overlooked
There was a knife in my boot all along

I'm gonna fly across the badlands like the wind
Tonight I'll ride again

Midnight In Memphis
(Rodney Hayden)

Walking these streets, shoulders low
A brown paper sack that's no longer cold
A lady, grants me three black magic wishes
And I move along through midnight in Memphis

Some kids on Beale are flagging down a taxi
I walk right by 'em, they don't even look at me
They probably drove in, on a weekend trip from Texas
For them life is good at midnight in Memphis

I pass the station where the greyhound stops
A busload gets on, but no one steps off
And I say, one day I'll buy a ticket
And I'll leave behind midnight in Memphis

The blues are playing around every corner
I'm looking for a free drink or if you can spare some quarters
Like a chosen few, we slipped through and nobody missed us
Somehow we ended up at midnight in Memphis

Like a chosen few, we slipped through and nobody missed us
How did I end up at midnight in Memphis

Nowhere to go, that's when it hits us
We're stuck at midnight in Memphis

After The Sun Goes Down
(Rodney Hayden, Robert Earl Keen, Bill Whitbeck)

Go to work at the break of day
Punch the clock and draw my pay
Boss man keeps getting in my way
From nine to five
Whistle blows and I head on home
Wash the dirt from my hard working bones
Call up my buddies on the telephone
Start to feel alive

After the sun goes down
We saddle up and hit the road
After the sun goes down
Don't matter which way we go
Wherever the highways winding
Don't know what we'll be finding
Spend all night just running around
After the sun goes down

Stars are out and the moon is full
Pass a bottle and take a pullt
Gonna break every single rule
It's gonna feel alright
Three girls in a GTO
Pull up beside 'em and say hello
I got a feeling that goes tonight
Oh tonight's the night

After the sun goes down
We saddle up and hit the road
After the sun goes down
Don't matter which way we go
Wherever the highways winding
Don't know what we'll be finding
Spend all night just running around
After the sun goes down

Got a song on the radio
No particular place to go
Timbuktu or maybe Mexico
It's all the same to me
Might head out to some dancehall
Give her the gas or let it crawl
Might not come back at all
We'll have to wait and see

After the sun goes down
We saddle up and hit the road
After the sun goes down
Don't matter which way we go
Wherever the highways winding
Don't know what we'll be finding
Spend all night just running around
After the sun goes down

Silverado Boys
(Rodney Hayden)

At Linda's on any given night
There's tequila and women, frequently fights
Someone will ask who's making all the noise
The local folks will say, it's the Silverado boys

They saddle up and ride into town
On a good night, they might buy the whole a round
There's Jack and there's Luke and there's Gus
Playing cards in the corner while they drink and cuss

They're the Silverado boys
They don't leave you much of a choice
They're quick with the women and quick with the leather
You might just be kidding, but soon you'll know better
Than to join up with the Silverado boys

The first cool breeze of the fall
Blew in a stagecoach from east Arkansas
Jack watched from a barbershop chair
The first time he saw Sadie with the coal black hair

As the next few months passed
Everyone knew she fancied young Jack
But soon the word spread around
They'd drive a heard to Wyoming to settle new ground

Sadie thought that Jack didn't care
So she spent her time with cowboys who had silver to spare
Jack tried but he couldn't change her mind
Still he'd go and see her from time to time

Soon the day came as was planned
For Luke and Jack and Gus and a few other young men
Sadie couldn't hold back the tears
The day she watched the Silverado boys dissapear

They're the Silverado boys
They don't leave you much of a choice
They're quick with the women and quick with the leather
You might just be kidding, but soon you'll know better
Than to join up with the Silverado boys

The months they went by so slow
That winter was the first time Jack had ever seen snow
They turned that valley into a ranch
And a  town popped up and they named it Spring Branch

One night at the Spring Branch Saloon
Gus said boys three years has passed us too soon
Luke could see the look on Jack's face
Said what do you say we leave this place

In Fort Worth they spent a night
To celebrate getting back to Texas alright
They found a seven card stud game and sat down
Across from Chloe known as queen of cowtown

Just before dawns breaking light
Chloe said boys there's something ain't right
She said someone's cheating and she pointed at Jack
He just threw back his whiskey and couldn't help but laugh

Little did the boys understand
Chloe was a quicker draw than any man
Gus said ma'am you're messing with the best
Before he finished his sentence she put a bullet in Jack's chest

He said boys it's the end of the trail
I pray that the Lord will save me from Hell
Just do me this one last request
And bury my bones at the Silverado ranch

As they carried that wooden box through town
Amazing Grace and spurs jingling was the only sound
A young child who looked just like Jack
Asked mama "who are those men?" as they passed

Sadie said they're the Silverado boys
And they don't leave you much of a choice
They're quick with the women and quick with the leather
You might just be kidding but soon you'll know better
Than to join up with the Silverado boys

These Arms
(Rodney Hayden, Bill Whitbeck, Kody Rakowitz)

These arms that held you tight are empty and blue
These lips that burned all night are cold missing you
My eyes have cried and cried that's all they can do
You went and broke my heart, you broke it in two

Little by little I'm falling apart
Soon there won't be nothing left at all
Over and over I call out your name
Nobody hears but these four walls

These arms that held you tight are empty and blue
These lips that burned all night are cold missing you
My eyes have cried and cried that's all they can do
You went and broke my heart, you broke it in two

Minute by minute, time keeps dragging on
Couting the days since you've been gone
Sooner or later this heartache will end
If I just keep holding on

These arms that held you tight are empty blue
These lips that burned all night are cold missing you
My eyes have cried and cried that's all they can do
You went and broke my heart, you broke it in two

It's Been A While
(Rodney Hayden)

They cut down that old oak tree
Where you first whispered to me beneath a full moon baby I love you
The dirt road that led to your house is all covered in pavement now
Yeah it looks nice, makes for an easy drive

Time flew by the last few years
It seems like we were just here

But we grew up and went our seperate ways
Those days are gone now but the memories stay on these old streets
Mile after mile, it's been a while

Stopped at the gas station there on Main
Down the street from the bowling lanes where I first held you hand
Wish we were young again
Drove by the school and the football field
I parked up on the hill where on a summer night
You told me goodbye

I can see us standing there
Then like a dream it disappears

We grew up and went our seperate ways
Those days are gone but the memories stay on these old streets
Mile after mile

We grew up and went our seperate ways
Those days are gone now but the memories stayed on these old streets
Mile after mile, baby it's been a while
